Airlie Beach, nestled amid rainforest ridges, tropical island horizons and bordered by coastal bays, yachts and marinas attracts visitors from around the world. Airlie Beach lagoon, situated on the landscaped Pacific Ocean foreshore, offers swimmers safe all year round, free access to clear, clean waters, a stroll from the main street and 10 minutes bus ride from the Whitsundays College of English.

Shute Harbour is a busy port and departure point to the tropical Island resorts and national parks. Over 70% of the Whitsundays region consists of protected marine and national parks. Conway National Park State rainforest areas offer a range of walking treks through tropical rainforests and with views of the sea and Whitsundays Islands.

The township of Proserpine is located inland from Airlie Beach.  The Proserpine Sugar Mill reflects the importance of sugar cane farming in the district.
